The beginnings of New Cross branch

In the summer of 1961 a letter arrived at BSAC headquarters from an address in SE. London. It asked for help to teach underwater swimming at the adult evening institute in Southwark. I offered to make initial contact.

The principal of the college explained that a course could be started in September, but no instructor could be found. As I had just finished my term as Chairman of the Club, and, always keen to spread our sport, I offered to take on this role .

At that time sub aqua was still in its infancy. A handful of aspiring pupils arrived, keen and eager to learn. The institute had its own indoor pool for training and also lecture rooms. There was storage place for equipment – at first my own on loan – but later purchased by the institute.

As there were sufficient pupils enrolled, I set about formation of a branch of the BSAC. I became simultaneously Chairman, Secretary/Treasurer, and Diving Officer until members could be properly elected to fill these posts.

Over the years numbers increased and the branch went steadily forward: qualifications were gained, open water diving was expanded, friendships were formed, and many people followed their enthusiasm for underwater swimming.

In 1996 the education authority gave up use of the Southwark building and the branch found a fresh home at Dulwich College. Here new members are welcomed with the same enthusiasm.
